Cabinet Door Size Calculator

Use our Cabinet Door Size Calculator to find the right door width and height. Get easy formulas for overlay and inset cabinet doors.

Cabinet Opening
Measure the actual opening -- do not assume the nominal cabinet size equals the opening.
Overlay
Overlay is set by your hinge and mounting plate specification -- it adds coverage beyond the opening on each edge.
Typical standard overlay: ~12.5-19 mm (1/2-3/4 in) per edge

Need new cabinet doors? Getting the size right can save time, money, and effort. Our Cabinet Door Size Calculator makes the job easy. Enter your opening size, pick a door type, and get the door width and height.

You can use it for kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and storage units. It works with single and double doors. It also supports overlay and inset designs. You don't need to work out the math by hand.

Cabinet Door Size Formula

The right formula depends on how your doors fit. An overlay door sits over the cabinet opening. An inset door fits inside it.

Here, OW means opening width, and OH means opening height. OL means overlay per edge. R means inset clearance per edge. G means the gap between two doors.

Single Overlay Door

Door width = OW + (2 × OL)

Door height = OH + (2 × OL)

Double Overlay Doors

Each door width = (OW + (2 × OL) − G) ÷ 2

Each door height = OH + (2 × OL)

Single Inset Door

Door width = OW − (2 × R)

Door height = OH − (2 × R)

Double Inset Doors

Each door width = (OW − (2 × R) − G) ÷ 2

Each door height = OH − (2 × R)

These formulas assume equal edge values and two equal doors. Always check your hinge needs and fit before you cut.

How to Use the Online Cabinet Door Size Calculator

  1. Enter the opening width. Measure the clear width of the cabinet opening.

  2. Enter the opening height. Measure from the top to the bottom of the opening.

  3. Choose the door type. Pick single overlay, double overlay, single inset, or double inset.

  4. Add the extra values. Enter the overlay or inset clearance. For double doors, also enter the center gap.

  5. Get your result. The calculator works out the door width and height. Check the sizes before you order or cut the doors.

You can enter values in millimeters, centimeters, inches, or feet. The calculator converts them to a common unit before it runs the math.

Example Cabinet Door Size Calculation

Suppose your cabinet opening is 600 mm wide and 600 mm high. You want two overlay doors. Each edge has a 12.5 mm overlay, with a 3 mm center gap.

Step 1: Find the width of each door.

Each door width = (600 + (2 × 12.5) − 3) ÷ 2

Each door width = 622 ÷ 2 = 311 mm

Step 2: Find the door height.

Door height = 600 + (2 × 12.5)

Door height = 625 mm

Final result: Each door should be 311 mm wide and 625 mm high.

Think of the center gap as a small space between two book covers. You must leave that space when you split the total width between the doors.

Final Verdict

Our Cabinet Door Size Calculator helps you find door sizes with less effort. It supports common overlay and inset layouts for single and double doors. Use the right measurements, enter the needed gaps, and check your hinge specs. A little care now can help you avoid costly cuts later.

FAQs

How do I measure a cabinet door?

Measure the cabinet opening first. Then apply the formula for your door type. For a door that already fits, measure its width and height as a useful check.

What is an overlay cabinet door?

An overlay door covers part of the cabinet face around the opening. The overlay value tells you how far the door extends past each edge.

What is an inset cabinet door?

An inset door sits inside the cabinet opening. It needs enough clearance to open and close without rubbing.

How do I size two cabinet doors?

Find the total width available for both doors. Subtract the center gap, then divide the rest by two. Use the height formula for your chosen door type.

Can I use inches or centimeters?

Yes. This calculator supports mm, cm, inches, and feet. It converts each input to millimeters before it calculates the result.

Should I cut the doors to the exact result?

Check your hinge type, cabinet frame, and needed gaps first. Real cabinets may not be square. Measure more than one spot if needed, and confirm the fit before cutting.
