A good coop gives ducks room to rest and move. It also helps keep their home dry and clean. Think of it like a bedroom. Each duck needs enough room to feel at ease.
This tool works for small backyard flocks and larger groups. You can view results in square feet or square metres.
Use these simple formulas to find the right space for your flock.
Indoor coop area = Number of ducks × Indoor space per duck
Outdoor run area = Number of ducks × Outdoor space per duck
Total area = Indoor coop area + Outdoor run area
Length = Required area ÷ Width
For this guide, use 5 square feet per standard duck indoors. Use 15 square feet per duck for the outdoor run. These are planning values, not fixed rules. Your breed and local rules may call for more room.
Enter the number of ducks in your flock.
Pick a duck size, such as bantam, standard, or large.
Set the indoor space for each duck.
Enter the outdoor space per duck and choose your unit.
Add the coop or run width if you want to find the length. View your results.
The calculator shows your indoor area, outdoor run area, and total space. It can also suggest room dimensions.
Say you have 6 standard ducks.
Indoor space = 6 × 5 = 30 square feet.
Outdoor space = 6 × 15 = 90 square feet.
Total space = 30 + 90 = 120 square feet.
So, you need 30 square feet inside and 90 square feet outside. A 5 × 6 ft coop gives you 30 square feet. A 9 × 10 ft run gives you 90 square feet.
A standard duck needs about 5 square feet of indoor floor space as a starting point. For 4 ducks, plan for 20 square feet. For 10 ducks, plan for 50 square feet. Add a safe outdoor run for more room to move.
Five square feet equals about 0.46 square metres. For 10 standard ducks, that means about 4.65 square metres indoors. At 15 square feet per duck, their run needs about 13.94 square metres.
A 4 × 8 ft duck coop has 32 square feet of floor space. At 5 square feet per duck, it can fit 6 standard ducks by this guide. Keep extra room for feeders and waterers.
A 4 × 4 ft duck house has 16 square feet. That's enough for 3 standard ducks at 5 square feet each. It falls short of the 20 square feet planned for 4 ducks.
