Need to find the weight of steel bars for a building job? Our Rebar Weight Calculator makes it easy. Enter the bar size, length, and number of bars. Get your total weight in seconds.
Use it for concrete slabs, beams, columns, and other projects. You can also check the weight of each bar. This helps you plan orders, track costs, and cut waste. No hard math is needed.
The rebar weight formula uses the bar's size and length. For metric units, use this simple rule:
Unit weight (kg/m) = Diameter² ÷ 162
Here, diameter means the bar's nominal size in millimeters.
To find the weight of one bar, use:
Bar weight (kg) = Unit weight (kg/m) × Length (m)
To find the total weight, use:
Total weight (kg) = Unit weight × Length × Number of bars
You can also convert the result. Divide kilograms by 1,000 to get metric tonnes. Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 to get pounds.
Choose the bar size. Select a standard diameter, such as 10, 12, 16, or 20 mm.
Enter the bar length. Use meters or feet, based on your needs.
Enter the bar count. Add the total number of bars in your project.
Choose the weight unit. View your result in kilograms, metric tonnes, or pounds.
Check the result. Review the unit weight, weight per bar, and total weight.
The calculator handles the math for you. Check your inputs before you use the result to order steel.
Suppose you need 20 steel bars. Each bar is 12 meters long, and each has a 16 mm diameter.
First, find the unit weight:
16 × 16 ÷ 162 = 1.58025 kg/m
Next, find the weight of one bar:
1.58025 × 12 = 18.963 kg
Now, find the total weight:
18.963 × 20 = 379.26 kg
So, the total rebar weight is about 379.26 kg, or 0.37926 metric tonnes.
Think of it like weighing one bag, then multiplying by the number of bags. The same idea works for steel bars.
Our Rebar Weight Calculator helps you estimate steel bar weight with less effort. It gives you a quick way to plan materials for concrete work. Use the rebar weight formula to check your results when needed.
Keep in mind that this is an estimate. Actual steel weight can vary within the limits set by the relevant standard. Add lap lengths, hooks, bends, and cutting waste when your project needs them.
Square the bar diameter in millimeters. Divide by 162 to get the estimated weight per meter. Then multiply by the total bar length in meters.
A 12 mm rebar weighs about 0.889 kg per meter using the standard estimating formula.
A 16 mm rebar weighs about 1.58 kg per meter. A 12-meter bar weighs about 18.96 kg.
Yes. Convert the length to meters, find the weight in kilograms, and multiply by 2.20462 to get pounds.
No. The formula gives an estimated nominal weight. For orders and design work, check the applicable steel standard and supplier data.
No. The basic result shows theoretical bar weight. Add extra length or waste only when your project plan calls for it.
