Use our Segmented Woodturning Calculator to find miter angles, segment sizes, and wood length for accurate wood ring projects.
| Calculation | Formula |
|---|---|
| Miter angle | m = 180° / N |
| Included angle | A = 360° / N |
| Outer edge length | Lo = Do × tan(m) |
| Inner edge length | Li = Di × tan(m) |
| Segment width | W = (Do − Di·cos(m)) / 2 |
| AAW stock length | Lb = (l+l')(N/2) + (K/cos(m))N |
Want to make a perfect wood ring? You need the right cuts. Even a small error can leave gaps.
Our Segmented Woodturning Calculator makes this job easy. It helps you find miter angles, segment sizes, and wood length. You can plan each ring with less guesswork.
This tool has two modes. Ring Mode gives exact cut sizes from your inputs. Estimate Mode helps you find the number of segments. It works with inches, mm, cm, and feet.
Whether you make bowls, vases, or wood art, this tool can save time and wood.
Segmented woodturning uses simple math. Each wood piece forms part of a ring.
Miter angle = 180° ÷ Number of Segments
Included angle = 360° ÷ Number of Segments
Outer edge length = Outside Diameter × tan(Miter Angle)
Inner edge length = Inside Diameter × tan(Miter Angle)
Segment width = [Outside Diameter − (Inside Diameter × cos(Miter Angle))] ÷ 2
First, find these values:
l = Outer Diameter × tan(Miter Angle)
l' = Inside Diameter × sin(Miter Angle)
Then use:
AAW Stock Length = (l + l') × (Number of Segments ÷ 2) + [Saw Kerf ÷ cos(Miter Angle)] × Number of Segments
Required Wood Length = AAW Stock Length × (1 + Waste Allowance ÷ 100)
Circumference = π × Diameter
Estimated Segments = Circumference ÷ Desired Segment Length
Our tool rounds this value to the nearest whole number. It also keeps the count at three or more.
You can use this tool in a few easy steps.
Choose a mode: Select Ring Mode or Estimate Mode.
Enter the size: Add the ring diameter and other needed values.
Set the segment count: Enter how many pieces you want in each ring.
Add extra details: Enter saw kerf and waste allowance if needed.
Calculate results: Click the calculate button to view your results.
You can also change the unit. The tool supports inches, mm, cm, and feet.
Let's make a wood ring with these values:
Outside diameter = 6 inches
Inside diameter = 4 inches
Number of segments = 12
Saw kerf = 0.125 inch
Waste allowance = 0%
Step 1: Find the miter angle.
Miter Angle = 180° ÷ 12 = 15°
Step 2: Find the outer edge length.
Outer Edge = 6 × tan(15°) = 1.608 inches
Step 3: Find the inner edge length.
Inner Edge = 4 × tan(15°) = 1.072 inches
Step 4: Find the segment width.
Segment Width = [6 − (4 × cos(15°))] ÷ 2
Segment Width = 1.068 inches
Step 5: Find the wood length.
l = 1.608 inches
l' = 4 × sin(15°) = 1.035 inches
AAW Stock Length = (1.607695 + 1.035276) × 6 + (0.125 ÷ cos(15°)) × 12
AAW Stock Length = 17.411 inches
You need about 17.411 inches of wood before adding extra waste.
A good ring starts with good cuts. Our Segmented Woodturning Calculator helps you plan each cut with ease. It gives you the miter angle, inner edge, outer edge, and wood length. You can also estimate the number of segments for a ring.
Use it before you cut your wood. A little planning can save both time and money.
It is an online tool for ring design. It finds cut angles, segment sizes, and wood needs.
Divide 180 by the number of segments. For 12 pieces, the angle is 15°.
It depends on your design. Common ring designs use 8, 10, 12, or 16 pieces.
Saw kerf is the wood lost during a cut. A wider blade removes more wood.
Yes. You can use it to plan rings for bowls, vases, and other turned wood art.
It supports inches, millimeters, centimeters, and feet.
