Accurately calculate how much carpet you need for stairs and landings with our free Stair Carpet Calculator. Fast, simple, and perfect for any stair size.
If you're planning to carpet your stairs, you're probably wondering, “How much carpet do I need for 13 stairs?” or “How do I calculate stair carpet with a landing?” Don’t worry — our Stair Carpet Calculator is here to help. Whether you have 12, 13, or 15 stairs, this tool gives you an instant answer in metres, feet, and square meters, saving you time and costly errors.
We developed this free calculator to make stair carpeting simple. Instead of confusing math and guessing measurements, you can enter your stair dimensions and get a 100% accurate estimate of the carpet length, width, and area you need — including landings and nosing types.
A Stair Carpet Calculator is a digital tool that helps homeowners, designers, and contractors quickly determine how much carpet is needed to fully cover a staircase. It calculates the total carpet length and area based on stair height (riser), depth (tread), width, number of steps, and optional landing space.
This calculator also accounts for nosing types like rounded, rectangular, or triangular, as well as overhangs and thickness — making it incredibly accurate and personalized.
The formula behind the Stair Carpet Calculator is carefully designed to cover all standard stair configurations. Here's how it calculates the total carpet requirement:
Total Carpet Length = (Number of Steps × Riser Height) + ((Number of Steps - 1) × Tread Depth)
Carpet Per Step = Riser Height - Thickness + Nosing Perimeter
Total Carpet Length = (Number of Steps × Carpet Per Step) + ((Number of Steps - 1) × Tread Depth)
Then, we add:
Final Length = Total Carpet Length + Landing Depth + Extra Allowance
Final Width = Stair Width + Width Allowance
Total Area = (Final Length × Final Width) / 10,000 (in m²)
Our calculator converts all measurements into centimeters internally for consistency, then gives results in meters, feet, and square meters.
Using our calculator is as easy as measuring your stairs with a tape measure:
Step 1: Enter Stair Measurements
Fill in the riser height (vertical part of a step), tread depth (flat part), and the number of stairs.
Step 2: Add Width and Landing
Input the stair width, landing depth (if you have one), and any extra allowances you want to include.
Step 3: Choose Nosing Type
Select whether your stairs have a rounded, rectangular, or triangular nosing, and provide the overhang and thickness if applicable.
Step 4: Get Instant Results
Click Calculate and the calculator will display the total carpet length, width, and area needed.
No more guesswork or over-ordering!
Carpeting stairs doesn’t have to be a complex math problem. Our Free Stair Carpet Calculator simplifies everything and provides highly accurate results — even for stairs with landings or unusual nosing. Whether you're carpeting 12 stairs, 13 stairs and a landing, or a full stairwell with 15 steps, you’ll get the exact carpet dimensions you need.
This calculator saves time, avoids waste, and ensures a perfect fit. So, before you buy or install stair carpet, make sure to use our tool — it's fast, free, and reliable.
If each stair has a riser height of 18 cm and a tread depth of 25 cm, for 13 stairs:
Total Length = (13 × 18) + (12 × 25) = 234 + 300 = 534 cm or 5.34 metres
Add landing and allowances if needed.
Using the same formula and adding a 100 cm landing and 10 cm allowance:
Total = 5.34 m (stairs) + 1 m (landing) + 0.1 m (allowance) = 6.44 metres
Nosing increases the carpet needed per step. If the nosing is rounded, the formula becomes:
Carpet Per Step = Riser - Thickness + Nosing Perimeter
So total carpet increases based on nosing type and overhang.
If each stair is 90 cm wide and 18 cm high with 25 cm depth:
Length = (15 × 18) + (14 × 25) = 270 + 350 = 620 cm = 6.2 m
Area = 6.2 m × 0.9 m = 5.58 m²
It depends on carpet type and installation cost. On average, it ranges from $250 to $600 USD including labor.
