Calculate PVC conduit fill fast with our online calculator. Check wire area, conduit area, fill rate, and allowed conduit space.
| Conductors | Maximum Fill % |
|---|---|
| 1 conductor | 53% |
| 2 conductors | 31% |
| More than 2 conductors | 40% |
A PVC conduit fill calculator helps you check wire space fast. It shows how much space wires use inside a PVC conduit. It also shows the allowed fill limit.
We developed this calculator so users can easily calculate PVC conduit fill. It can help with wire checks, conduit size checks, and basic electrical design.
For one round wire, use this formula:
Wire area = π × d² ÷ 4
For many wires:
Total wire area = wire area × wire count
Then:
PVC conduit fill rate = (Total wire area ÷ Conduit area) × 100
The conduit area is:
Conduit area = π × D² ÷ 4
Here, d means wire outside diameter. D means conduit inside diameter.
Under NEC Chapter 9, the fill limit is 53% for one conductor, 31% for two, and 40% for more than two. The wire size includes its insulation. Ground wires also count. For mixed wire sizes, use each wire's actual area.
This also makes the tool useful as an electrical conduit fill calculator by diameter, wire conduit fill calculator, and conduit fill size calculator.
Suppose you have three wires. Each wire has an outside diameter of 0.216 inch. The PVC conduit has an inside diameter of 0.602 inch.
First, find one wire area:
π × 0.216² ÷ 4 = 0.0366 in²
Now find the total wire area:
0.0366 × 3 = 0.1098 in²
Next, find the conduit area:
π × 0.602² ÷ 4 = 0.2848 in²
Now find the fill rate:
(0.1098 ÷ 0.2848) × 100 = 38.6%
There are more than two wires. So, the NEC limit is 40%. The result is 38.6%, which stays below the 40% limit. Southwire lists 0.602 inch as the inside diameter for 1/2-inch Schedule 40 PVC.
Think of the conduit like a pipe. The wires are like pencils inside it. The fill rate tells you how much room those pencils use.
A PVC conduit fill calculator makes wire fill checks quick and clear. It can also act as an electrical conduit fill calculator, pvc conduit size calculator, or online conduit fill calculator.
For mixed wire sizes, use each wire's outside area. You can also use a conduit fill calculator for cable when the cable's actual outside size is known.
For Canada, don't assume NEC limits apply. A project may need a CEC conduit fill calculator or an electrical conduit fill calculator Canada based on the current Canadian Electrical Code. Code rules can vary by location.
Under the NEC, the common limit is 40% for more than two conductors. It is 31% for two and 53% for one.
Yes. The same area method checks how much wire space the conduit uses.
No. Trade size and inside diameter are not the same. Use the actual inside diameter.
Yes. Find the area of each wire. Then add the areas before finding the fill rate.
The core area math is the same. But Canadian work must follow the current CEC rules that apply to the project.
