Calculate erosional velocity fast with our Erosional Velocity calculator. Use the API RP 14E formula for pipe flow and mixture density checks.
| Equation / Value | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vₑ = C ÷ √ρm | Erosional velocity | ft/s, ρm in lb/ft³ |
| ρm = (12409SLP + 2.7RSGP) ÷ (198.7P + RTZ) | Two-phase mixture density | P: psia, T: °R |
| C = 100 | Continuous service | Solids-free |
| C = 125 | Intermittent service | Solids-free |
| C = 150–200 | Continuous service, corrosion-controlled / corrosion-resistant | Solids-free |
An Erosional Velocity calculator helps you check flow speed in a pipe. It uses the API RP 14E method. You can use full mode with fluid data. You can also use direct mode with mix density. The tool gives the speed in ft/s. It makes a hard math task quick and clear.
The main erosional velocity formula is:
Ve = C / √ρm
Ve means erosional speed in ft/s. C is the set speed factor. ρm means mix density in lb/ft³.
For full two-phase use, the tool first finds mix density:
ρm = (12409 × SL × P + 2.7 × R × SG × P) / (198.7 × P + R × T × Z)
P means pipe flow press in psia. SL is liquid spec grav. SG is gas spec grav. R is the gas-liquid rate in scf/bbl. T is flow temp in °R. Z is the gas comp factor.
The full mode first finds mix density. It then uses that value to find erosional speed. The direct mode skips that step.
Let C = 100. Let mix density be 25 lb/ft³.
Ve = 100 / √25
Ve = 100 / 5
Ve = 20 ft/s
So, the erosional speed is 20 ft/s. Think of it as a speed cap for flow. If the real flow speed is higher, check the pipe and flow case.
For a liquid case, use the main formula when liquid density is known in lb/ft³. Say C = 100 and liquid density is 50 lb/ft³.
Ve = 100 / √50
Ve ≈ 14.14 ft/s
This gives a fast check. It does not cover all causes of pipe wear.
The Erosional Velocity calculator makes this check fast. Use the right units and good input data. Then use the result as a design check. Sand, rust, pipe shape, flow type, and other site facts can change pipe wear.
It is a flow speed used to check the risk of pipe wear.
Ve = C / √ρm.
The main result is ft/s. It can also check real speed in m/s, mph, and km/h.
Yes. Use direct mode when liquid mix density is known.
C is a set factor used in the API RP 14E check. Its value can vary by case.
