  3. SEER = Cooling Output (Btu) / Energy Used (Wh)

The run time drops out when both sides use the same time. So you can also use:

SEER = Cooling Size (Btu/h) / Power (W)

The tool can use tons, kW, W, or HP for input. It can use Btu, kBtu, MMBtu, Wh, kWh, or MWh for total data.

Example SEER Rating Calculation

Say an AC has a size of 36,000 Btu/h. It uses 2,000 W. It runs for 1,500 hours.

First, find the cool output.

36,000 × 1,500 = 54,000,000 Btu

Next, find the power use.

2,000 × 1,500 = 3,000,000 Wh

Now find SEER.

54,000,000 ÷ 3,000,000 = 18 Btu/Wh

So, the SEER is 18.
