Find your piano's age with our free piano age calculator. Check Yamaha, Kawai, and Steinway serial numbers to estimate the year it was made.
Want to know how old your piano is? Our Piano Age Calculator helps you find its likely year of manufacture and age. Choose a supported piano brand, enter its serial number, and check the result. You can also enter a known year and date by hand. This gives you another way to work out your piano's age.
A piano age calculator is a tool that estimates when a piano was made. Many piano makers use serial numbers to track the order of production. These numbers can help link a piano to a year of manufacture.
You must match the number with the right brand's records. Each maker has its own serial number range. Our tool uses built-in charts for Yamaha, Kawai, and Steinway & Sons.
It also has separate charts for some Kawai pianos made in Japan, the USA, and Indonesia.
First, choose the brand and the right serial number system. Then enter the number found on your piano. The tool checks it against that brand's chart. It finds the latest listed year whose first serial number is not higher than yours.
For example, a chart may show that one year starts at serial number 10,000. The next year may start at 12,000. A number from 10,000 to 11,999 would match the first year in that chart.
The charts in this calculator are approximate. So, a serial number lookup gives an estimated year, not a confirmed factory date. If you already know the year, you can use the manual date mode instead.
The basic formula is:
Piano Age = Reference Year − Piano Manufacturing Year
For example, if a piano was made in 1990 and the reference year is 2026:
Piano Age = 2026 − 1990 = 36 Years
This gives the age in whole years. The tool uses the year from your chosen reference date. By default, that date is today.
If you enter a month or day, it can also show a more exact time span.
1. Select your piano's brand. Choose Yamaha, Kawai, or Steinway & Sons. For Kawai, pick the right country-based serial system.
2. Find the serial number. Check the piano's frame or plate. Read each digit with care.
3. Enter the serial number. Type the number as shown. For some Kawai models, you may include the A or F prefix.
4. Click the Calculate button. The tool checks the number against its built-in chart. You can also choose the manual year mode if you know the date.
5. Review the result. Check the likely year, age, age group, and other result details.
In manual mode, enter the year of manufacture. You may add the month and day for a closer age result. The reference date lets you work out the age as of a date you choose.
The serial number is often stamped or printed on the piano's inner frame. Its spot can vary by brand and model. Open the lid with care, and use a light to read the number.
Do not mistake a model number or part number for the serial number.
On an upright piano, look under the top lid. Check the iron plate or the area near the tuning pins. Some models place the number on the back or inside the cabinet.
Use the maker's guide if you cannot find it.
On a grand piano, lift the top lid and look at the cast iron frame. Check near the tuning pins or beneath the music desk. The exact spot can differ by brand and model.
Here is an example of how the lookup and age math work. The serial number below is for illustration only. It is not a claim about a real piano's factory record.
Piano brand: Yamaha
Serial number: 6,500,000
Estimated year from the calculator's sample chart: 2020
Reference year: 2026
Piano Age = 2026 − 2020 = 6 Years
The result is an estimated age of 6 years. A real lookup depends on the number you enter and the chart in the tool. The chart's final listed year may also mean "that year or later."
Accuracy depends on the brand chart and the serial number. This calculator uses approximate year ranges. Old or missing records can limit a lookup. A serial number may also need a country or factory match, as with the Kawai options in this tool.
The year a piano was made may differ from the year a shop sold it. A piano may also have sat in storage before sale. For that reason, the age result does not prove the exact build date.
Our Piano Age Calculator gives you a simple way to estimate a piano's age. Choose the right brand and serial system, or enter a known date by hand. Check the serial number with care.
The result can help you learn more about your piano's age and history. It does not tell you the full state or value of your piano.
Find its brand and serial number first. Use a matching serial number lookup, or enter its known year in manual mode. The result gives an estimated age.
Yes, if the maker's chart covers the number. Choose the right brand and serial system. The result may be an estimate.
Yes. You can use this piano age calculator to check a supported serial number or enter a known date. No paid lookup is needed in the tool.
Look under the top lid, on the iron plate, or near the tuning pins. The spot varies by make and model.
Look on the cast iron frame, near the tuning pins, or beneath the music desk. Check the maker's guide if needed.
It depends on the maker's records and the chart used. This tool uses approximate serial number ranges, so treat the year as an estimate.
You may be able to. The tool's charts cover some older years for its listed brands. Very old or unlisted numbers may need help from the maker or a piano expert.
No. A serial number can help show the piano's likely age. Its value also depends on its make, model, condition, sound, and upkeep.
