Use our Rivet Size Calculator to find rivet diameter, length, and basic shear and bearing capacity with easy formulas.
Choosing the right rivet size is key to a strong joint. A rivet that's too short may not form a good head. A rivet that's too wide may not fit the hole.
Our Rivet Size Calculator makes this task quick and easy. It helps you find the right rivet diameter and length. You can enter two or more plate sizes. The tool then works out the result in seconds.
It uses Unwin's formula to find the rivet diameter. It also supports snap-head and countersunk rivets. You can even check shear and bearing strength.
The calculator uses simple formulas to find the right rivet size.
It uses Unwin's formula:
Rivet Diameter (D) = 6.04 × √(Minimum Plate Thickness)
Here, D and plate thickness use mm.
Total Thickness (T) = Plate 1 + Plate 2 + Other Plates
The length depends on the rivet head type.
For a snap-head rivet:
Rivet Length (L) = T + (1.5 × D)
For a countersunk rivet:
Rivet Length (L) = T + (0.6 × D)
Shear Capacity = (π ÷ 4) × D² × Allowable Shear Stress
Bearing Capacity = D × Bearing Thickness × Allowable Bearing Stress
The strength results use newtons (N). These checks give a basic estimate, not a full safety test.
Follow these five steps to get your result.
Enter plate thickness: Add the thickness of at least two plates.
Choose a unit: Select mm, cm, or inches.
Select the head type: Choose snap-head or countersunk.
Choose the diameter mode: Pick a standard or custom rivet diameter.
Run the calculation: Click the calculate button to see the rivet size.
You can also turn on the design check. Enter the stress values and bearing thickness to see the strength estimates.
Let's join two metal plates. The first plate is 4 mm thick. The second plate is 6 mm thick. We will use a snap-head rivet.
Step 1: Find the thinnest plate.
Minimum Thickness = 4 mm
Step 2: Find the total thickness.
T = 4 + 6 = 10 mm
Step 3: Find the raw rivet diameter.
D = 6.04 × √4
D = 12.08 mm
The nearest standard size is 12 mm.
Step 4: Find the rivet length.
L = 10 + (1.5 × 12)
L = 10 + 18
L = 28 mm
The final result is a 12 mm × 28 mm snap-head rivet.
Think of rivet length like a shirt button. It needs extra material to hold both sides in place.
Our Rivet Size Calculator helps save time and reduce guesswork. It finds the raw diameter, picks the nearest standard size, and works out the needed length. It also offers basic shear and bearing checks.
Use the result as a starting point. For load-bearing joints, check the design rules and material limits. A safe rivet joint needs more than the right size.
A Rivet Size Calculator finds the right rivet diameter and length. It uses plate thickness and rivet head type.
Unwin's formula is D = 6.04 × √t. Here, t means the thinnest plate thickness in mm.
Add the total plate thickness to extra length for the head. Use 1.5 times the diameter for snap-head rivets. Use 0.6 times the diameter for countersunk rivets.
Yes. You can enter two or more plate thicknesses. The tool adds them to find total thickness. It uses the thinnest plate to find the raw diameter.
It supports mm, cm, and inches for plate thickness and custom diameter. It also supports MPa, N/mm², psi, and ksi for stress.
Yes. It gives basic shear and bearing capacity estimates. It does not replace a full structural design check.
