V₁ = (C₂ × V₂) ÷ C₁
For example, to make 1 liter (1000 mL) of 0.5% solution from 3.5% bleach:
V₁ = (0.5 × 1000) ÷ 3.5 = 142.86 mL of bleach
Water needed: 857.14 mL
If you’re using dry chlorine powder like calcium hypochlorite (e.g., 35% strength), the formula is:
grams needed = (desired % ÷ powder %) × 1000 × volume in liters
So, to make 0.5% solution using 35% powder in 1 liter of water:
grams = (0.5 ÷ 35) × 1000 = 14.29 grams of powder

Dilution Ratio = (stock concentration ÷ target concentration) - 1

To disinfect water for drinking, use a very low chlorine concentration — typically 2 to 4 drops of 5%–6% bleach per liter of water, or about 1.5–2 ppm.
200 ppm ≈ 0.02% concentration. Using 5% bleach:
(0.02 ÷ 5) × 1000 = 4 mL of bleach per liter of water
